CBBC Newsround | THE POPE | Choosing a Pope
I am not a catholic, but I think it is a very interesting religion. Everytime I see the pope he seems to look worse an worse, and I think his time may come very shortly. So I stated thinking you know, who chooses the next pope. It seems that there is an exodus to Rome for all the Cardinals in the world (alot of Caridnals to say the least) and I thought man that is alot of plane tickets. Then I thought about how the Catholic church is the richest entitiy in the history of the entire world. So I guess that they probably can afford it. But when you think about it, someone is gonna get a shitload of sky miles when the pope dies. I am talking tons of free trips to places within the continental United States. Well it seems that after this mass migration to Rome, 9 days after the Pope is buried all the cardinals pile into a building and select the Pope by a 2/3rds vote. During the election process the chimneys show black smoke, and on the day they decide on the new pop they burn white smoke, so that everyone will know that a new Pope has been chosen. Kinda neat.
