The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer. |

Andy Olmsted's Last Blog Entry.
(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that. |

Drinking stories that put yours to shame
Via Keith
To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.
Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood. |

making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms. |

Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.
Entire Article is Dead On. A must read for anyone in the software biz. |

Lawmakers Launch New Anti-Spyware Bill
There are not many people in washington (regardless of party) who I think are that creative (and that may be our problem). But one set of people in washington that really continue to amaze me are the people who come up with the names of Bills going through the houses. The new anti-spyware (those little programs that 80% of people have on thier computers that watch every single things you do on your computer and relay it to a company) is called 'Spyblock (Software Principles Yielding Better Levels of Consumer Knowledge) ' I mean how frickin' cool is that. Almost as cool as the totally useless CAN-SPAM bill that did absolutely nothing. Read about our leaders creativity...

while sitting down move your right leg in a clockwise circle get up a decent rhyme to it. After about 5 or 10 seconds with your right index finger (the one next to your thumb by the way) draw a number 6 (six) in the air, you will notice that your right leg has reversed direction. Keep trying if you want it will keep reversing direction you can't stop it.

HOLY SHIZNIT! It woudl be utterly crazy if AOL were to buy Ask Jeeves (Teoma) and drop Google. In my opinion that would almost create a 4 way Search Engine war:
AOL(Teoma) Vs. Google Vs. Yahoo(Inktomi/Overrture) Vs MSN(Billy G)
Will update further when I hear more.

Taken from /.
Taken from /. for anyone who ever wants to remove the 'widget' from Guiness Bottles (purchased by an Anon Coward):
Steps to remove rocket-widget:
What you will need:
(1) "Nitro" bottle of Guinness Draught. Not "Extra Stout".
(1) Pair of needle-nose pliers.
(1) Stomach full of food.
1) Empty bottle. Preferably by drinking contents.
2) Clean bottle of remaining contents.
3) Hold bottle by the bottom and shake widget so that it becomes stuck in the neck.
4) Reach in with pliers and pull out plastic widget.
Tada! Perform this repeatedly to collect widgets for no real reason.

Grey Tuesday
I have heard the Grey Album, it is amazingly good. Seems that a lot of people think that EMI is overstepping the bounds by sending out the letters. It is there job to protect the Beatles rights, although I am not sure how DJ mix tapes are represented in the case though. I mean the people at eBay selling the CD are breaking the law that is clear, I just do not know to what extent the people who plan on posting the mp3s are responsible though and I think EMI may be oversteppign there bounds on that one. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

MMORPG Economies
I Love online games. I think of the reasons I love them is that i can interact with people and just logoff when I get bored, instead of having to endure a whole night with them. If I start to get bored I just log off and find somthing else to do. One of the other reasons that i like online games so much is that it is a test to see who can get to have the highest achievements, highest kills, highest level, highest xp count, and highest bankroll. The last I like a lot becuase a lot of these games have been around for awhile and everyone has tried everything to make money in them. I call them mini economie. Thats why i was so happy when i stumbled onto this great paper on themPaper on 'mini-economies'. It was written very well by an academic mind (not some dude who stayed up for the past 3 days eatting funyons and whinning about paladins skill caps). It is a really good paper. Check it.

FYI..
theodp writes "Want to make sure you never get a Pepsi bottle that doesn't win a free iTunes download? To avoid the unlucky caps, MacMerc says look for Diet Pepsi, Pepsi and Sierra Mist (and some Mountain Dew) bottles with yellow caps, tip the bottle 25 degrees, look up under the cap, and toss the bottle back on the shelf if you see the word 'again' instead of random letters."

Yahoo! Search Results for cyanbane
Well it finally happened..
This morning Yahoo switched there results to the new algo that they have been using after they began to associate with Inktomi. No Mo google for yahoo, I wonder when MSN is gonna drop the bomb. I had heard that yahoo had invested in Google and I personally did not think they would change result sets until after the Google IPO. I was wrong :) but in a good way.

THE DREAMERS / ****(NC-17)
I Personally cannot wait to add this to my Netflix queue. Call me common, but alteast I can judge Vs more movies..
THE DREAMERS / ****(NC-17): "a perfect imitation of Garbo in 'Queen Christina.' And there's a bitter argument between Matthew and Theo about who is greater -- Keaton or Chaplin? Matthew, the American"
