The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer. |

Andy Olmsted's Last Blog Entry.
(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that. |

Drinking stories that put yours to shame
Via Keith
To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.
Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood. |

making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms. |

Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

MSNBC - 9 Americans, including 4 civilians, killed in Iraq
Post war Iraq is chaotic. It is chaotic becuase the United States did not plan for it. I will say this though. With as much shit as we have put up with from over there. This is intollerable. I am sure that this is a minority of people who did this. But let me tell you this, I can look at the peoples (kids) faces in the picture and tell you this. Those people are not afraid enough of Americans if they would do that. Make them afraid. I don't know where it broke down in the last year, but those people need to be reminded about who came into their town and took down Sadaam, and also reminded about who will take them down when they do somthign like this to US citizens. Everyone of the people who desicrated that body should be tried with American Justice. If that doesnt work. Bomb them again. We have made many mistakes in this war after the original 13 days. Don't let these people demoralize that and poke fun of every American who has died over there. Specifically those over there that were dragged through the street. Especially those who are not soldiers. If they dont respect Americans helping them, then they need to be taught to be afraid of them. Swiftly.

OPEC agrees to implement production cuts - Mar. 31, 2004
It is my belief that within 15-20 years, there will a different source of energy that will power maybe 50% of the transportation methods in the US. I think that this will make our econom stronger through innovation. The only thing that we cannot do is let Oil Executives hamper the efforts for this because of a loss of profits for thier companies. Once we even cut 25% into our OPEC oil neccesity and do not need
that 25% anymore. The middle east is going to be a scary place. The deviation among the rich and the poor will reduce from the amazing gap that it is today. It will force them to innovate and restructure business much like our economy and that of the UK and China's economy today and that of Japan's in the 1980s. Would be a different world, if we could just not let Oil Execs impact our political system as much. One thing that I can say that GW has done well is allocate funds to the research of these studies even though he comes from an Oil family. We still need an non oilman president though.

CNN.com - Ryan Adams on 'Demolition,' writing and shopping at Gap - Oct. 25, 2002
After that grotesque search... I did pop up this which was interesting
"TMR: How did you feel when The Corrs and Bono covered your 'Gold' track, 'When The Stars Go Blue?'
Adams: They covered it on their own. I didn't even know. No one even told me it was going to happen. Apparently, as I understand it, Bono walked in and said 'this is a song we're going to duet.' He wanted to do it. The other day I went and bought my first TV. I was in Circuit City in Union Square, and I go to purchase the television and that video comes on of them playing that song. I look at the Circuit City clerk and I say, 'They're playing my song,' and he goes, 'Yeah man, whatever. Just give me your credit card.' He thought that I meant they're playing my song, like, when you have a song at the prom. He thought that 'When The Stars Go Blue' was it. The guy for two seconds didn't know who I was and I thought to myself, 'This is an excellent, excellent job. I have managed to have no one know who I am after seven years.' "

We analyze a large file sharing dataset which includes 0.01% of the worlds downloads from the last third of 2002. We focus on users located in the U.S. Their audio downloads are matched to the album they were released on, for which we have concurrent U.S. weekly sales data. This allows us to consider the relationship between downloads and sales. To establish causality, we instrument for downloads using technical features related to file sharing (such as network congestion or song length) and international school holidays, both of which are plausibly exogenous to sales. We are able to obtain relatively precise estimates because the data contain over ten thousand album-weeks...
Even in the most pessimistic specification, five thousand downloads are needed to displace a single album sale...high selling albums actually benefit from file sharing.

MSNBC - White House targets Clark
"'They are vulnerable, which is why they are attacking so hard,' Thurber said. 'You have to go back to Vietnam or Watergate to get the same feel about the structure of argument coming out of the White House against Clarke's statements. They've had multiple people rebutting him, with information that is incomplete and selective at best.'"
That is becuase that is the best they have to throw at him, first O'Neill says all of this and we all ignore him (i'm guilty too) as a protagisist who want wants to get back at the Bush admin with a book deal waiting in the wings, but then we have Clarke who has been through multiple presidencies and is somewhat bipartisian and has beeen a counterterrorism official going all the way back to the first Bush, then i start to hear him repeat what O'Neill said. Bush was after Huesien from the get-go, which is not bad thing, but you shoudl not tell your country about having intelligence about WMD that the enemy posseses (which has not been found yet) and that they should turn there backs to the world (and our previous allies) and invade Iraq to take over one man's rule, all based on information that he [Bush] might have thought was true at the time, but we see a year later is false. (Bad Intelligence?) Something isn't right here, our economy is shit, and the world hates us, what good has Bush really done except oust the Taliban and Sadaam? Nothing any president with a good army could have done had they wanted too. I am not voting for Bush, nor Kerry, but for anyone on the fence I hope he catches Bin Ladin... Lord knows he needs it. I just hope Bin Ladin is not in Canada, becuase Bush will probably tell us of of his intellegence that Canada has WMD.

Wired 12.04: The God Particle and the Grid
"The cost: $3 billion and change. The goal: to find one lousy subatomic particle.
Specifically, the Higgs boson, the most elusive speck of matter in the universe. Often called the God particle, it's supposed to be the key to explaining why matter has mass. Physicists believe that Higgs particles generate a kind of soupy ether through which other particles move, picking up drag that translates into mass on the macroscopic scale. The Higgs is the cornerstone of 21st-century physics; it simply has to be there, otherwise the standard model of the universe collapses."

"What is the role of a party leader? Assemble the party, perhaps pick a place for camping? I'm only a level 27 warrior, but I know that in the healthiest, most fun, most profitable parties the group has worked like a democracy, every voice is heard, unless they're Japanese, because we all know that all the Japanese players are just south of East Sarutabaruta fishing with their names in blue and never, ever are in any parties because they can solo any monster in the game with an onion dagger. Damien's first big gig in the Olympia, featuring most of the tracks from O, plus
a few others including a great rendition of Groovin'. Other highlights include
Lisa's gorgeous Silent Night before the curtains go up - You could hear a pin
drop in the venue. Listen out for her during the climax of I Remember as well.
Wow. Tomo's Billie Jean is great too.
Overall a brilliant recording of a brilliant gig that remains probably the best
Damien bootleg out there. A must have.

CNN.com - Police identify Spain 'bombers' - Mar 16, 2004
CNN also has obtained an al Qaeda document that spells out the terrorist group's plan to separate Spain from the U.S.-led coalition on Iraq.
The document was published on the main message board that is used by al Qaeda and its sympathizers last December.
The strategy spelled out in the document calls for using terrorist attacks to oust Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's Partido Popular from power and replace it with the Socialists.
That, in turn, was expected to drive a wedge between Washington and Madrid and result in the withdrawal of Spanish military forces from Iraq.
"We think the Spanish government will not stand more than two blows, or three at the most, before it will be forced to withdraw because of the public pressure on it," the al Qaeda document says.
"If its forces remain after these blows, the victory of the Socialist Party will be almost guaranteed -- and the withdrawal of Spanish forces will be on its campaign manifesto."
Eric: It only took one :(

Someone just mentioed to me that yesterday (Madrid bombings) was exactly 911 days after 9-11. Without being spooked, I do think that is somewhat of an odd coincidence. If it means anything I don't know. It was an awful thing, and I hope those cowards that did are brought to justice. I do however, do not think it was the Basque Sepratists, I think it was the work of Al-Qieda.

great joke via James:
A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected:
a half-gallon of 2% milk,
a carton of eggs,
a quart of orange juice,
a head of romaine lettuce,
a 2 lb. can of coffee,
and a 1 lb. package of bacon.
As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her, watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk stated, "You must be single".
The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single.
She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status.
Curiosity getting the better of her, she said, "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct. But how on earth did you know that"?
The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly."

The Opte Project
Opte uses a unique idea. Boarder Gateway Protocol (BGP) generally does not deal with classless or subneted networks. Instead of mapping every single IP address on the Internet (theoretical maximum of 2^32=4,294,967,296 hosts) we simply traceroute to each class C network. This reduces the theoretical maximum to 16,777,216 hosts. On top of that, you can remove the Arin Reserved network addresses, which include about 47 class A networks. This again reduces the theoretical list to around 13,697,024 blocks. Utilizing Dan Kaminski's scanrand2 tool from his Paketto kit, we can process a theoretical 16,000 class C networks per 6 seconds. This processing is then placed into the Opte MySQL database where it is then later converted into LGL formatted code.
In the end they have a super cool visual representation of the inet from only 1 computer and that can be done in 1 day. Check it out. Very cool.
