Rock Star alter egos are growing in numbers
"You're forming a fake band -- that's what you do," says Sadri, calling the game "the best part of karaoke, adding in a drummer and guitars."
The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer.

(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that.

Drinking stories that put yours to shame

To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.

Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood.
making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms.
Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

Lost (and without a clue)

The Answer to everything is:

Since Episode 1, me and Lindz have religiously watched Lost. For a show that is almost on its twentieth new episode, the show never fails to excite and continues to make us wonder about not only the fate of the characters but also the motives. Last nights episode back grounded Kate (most lost episodes have flashbacks about one of the characters). This was the second Katecentric episode and really dived a little deeper into her past but also brought up tons of new questions. After talking with Joel some today about it here is where my mind currently stands: In relation to last nights episode: What the hell did Kate do to make her mom be so scared of her and scream for help? They did a good job of balancing out the bad guy ness of Locke by showing that Jack has done just as much (if not more) hiding than Locke has (re Hurley and kate as Fugitive comment to Locke) Charlie and Claire were developed a lot better as a couple (haircut songs, etc) [When is Charlie gonna find out about the planes Heroin? My guess is that Claire/ The Baby is what stops him]? Is this gonna kinda be like a star wars thing where Charlie is the real reason the baby needs to be born and not the actually baby (a la Luke/Vader)?) What is with the science teacher? They pulled him out and gave him distinct lines (I have seen his face before on other companies commercials) Could they be pulling this guy in as a main character or was he just the oracle/muse for this episode to move the plot? (remember the guy from epi 5 or 6 with the rash? He never developed) Into overarching storyline: OK so far it seems like everyone has lost someone either before or after the plane crash: Jack (his Father) and (his Wife?) Kate (her Childhood boyfriend?) (Innocense/Ability to live freely?) Locke (His Father) (His paralysis [not a bad thing]) Micharl (Walt, Walts mom) Walt (His mom, his previous life) Sun (her husband / Marriage) Jin (his wife / Marriage) Claire (her babys daddy) Charley (his brother / his career (fame) / drug addiction [not a bad thing]) Hurley (his winning from the lottery? / Good Luck?) Boone (Shannon / Life) Shannon (Boone) Sawyer (Ability to extract revenge) Sayid (his woman) Now some characters kinda have extra powers. Hurley: Some kinda weird Luck Locke: Senses things/ paralysis lifted / knows about the island a bit Walt: Freaky way to tell things / kill things I dont know where to go from here. It really all depends on the hatch. If it follows the comic book theory I discussed in week 4 5, then there is some sort of alien in that thing. (The polar bear still fits). Joel and Ali think it might have something with everyone having father issues, which fits for most of the chars (maybe Kate killed her dad?) The fathers of some of the island residents have been the root of troubles, but what about Hurley (dont remember a dad) or Sayid (he doesnt talk about his dad) or Charlie. But that would explain Claires baby (no daddy), Walt (dad is picking him up), Jack (dad is a mess and dead), Locke (dad harvested his organ), and Sun and Jin (her dad is the root of their problems). Lindz also noticed that last night the date when Kate and Tom? (childhood friend) was on Aug 15th, 1989 which brings us back to 815 (8/15/1989). So far 815 are common throughout the story: Oceanic Flight 815 Kates Bank Box is #815 Charlie sells copier model C815 Locke describes the nerf footballs on isle 8 and the regular footballs on isle 15 when he works in the store Hurleys Winning Lotto numbers and also the numbers repeated by the island , and also the numbers next to the hatch are 4,8,15,16,23,42 I wonder if episodes 4,8,15, and 16 say something. Questions and other neat things about the show thus far: Sawyer met Jacks dad in the bar Hurley was on the Korean TV station when Jin goes to receive dog John Locke, thats a familiar name What ever happened to the older black lady (Rose?) (lady who wouldnt talk who belied her husband was still alive, Jack has conversation with her in first couple of episodes) Where has Walts dog been lately? Me and Lindz think that jacks dad might have something to do with Lockes paralysis, or Jin was delivering watches to someone associated with the islanders in LA. Only time will tell. What a great show. Lunch is over back to work.

Brainstorm it:

Speaking of how everyone has lost someyhing in their life....everyone has been abandoned in their life prior to being on the island.

Maybe they all need something from each other. Theya re all "lost", both in a mental and physical state.
