The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer. |

Andy Olmsted's Last Blog Entry.
(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that. |

Drinking stories that put yours to shame
Via Keith
To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.
Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood. |

making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms. |

Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.
Entire Article is Dead On. A must read for anyone in the software biz. |

Oceanic 815
Well I will have a write up about our vacation and stuff tonight (when I have some time) Until then though this should cheer up some Lost fans:
This is viral marketing at it's best [Thanks Arena Force]:
1.) Go to http://www.oceanic-air.com
2.) Under Adult type 4, under Senior type 8 in each of the six boxes put in Hurley's Lucky Numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42)
3.) This should take you to the seating chart for flight 815.
4.) Now the rows at the bottom of the plane. Click on them in order for each of Hurley's Numbers. (4,8,15,16,23,42)
5.) Watch :)
I have also played with the seating arrangements and picked up green spots for:
Boone (9F)
Shannon (9E)
Jack (23A)
Ed Mars (27G) (Is this Hurley??)
Locke (24D)
Anyone else getting anything cool?
Update (2:30p): A friend of Arena Force just noted: "If you highlight all of the text on the Ocanic home page, copy and then paste it into Word you will uncover 2 hidden messages from other passengers. Also, it looks like there is a page from the script hidden on the home page."
Update II(2:40p):
Here are the two messages in hidden divs on the main page:
If anyone should find this message, please get word to Sandra Rafflethorpe of Palm Avenue in Lewiston, Idaho that her sister, Sally is alive and stranded on an island somewhere in the South Pacific. Please send help soon. Things are bad. And they're getting worse...
Sally
Robert D. West, of Santa Barbara, California, USA survived a horrific plane crash and is stranded on an island somewhere Northeast of Australia and Southwest of Hawaii. In the event that I am never found, please forward word of my fate to parents, Mr. and Mrs. John West, of Tucson Arizona. Thank you.
Robert
Update III(2:50p):
Found another on the seating chart page:
If you are reading this note PLEASE get word to my wife, Christina Smith that her husband,
Jake survived the crash of Oceanic Flight #815 along with 47 others.
Darling, I miss you so much and dream of the day I can see your face again.
The very thought of that day is all that keeps me going here. Please don?t forget me!
Jake Smith
Update IV:
Here is the image of the script page from the main page (Click for larger view):
What is a Mapingauri you ask? Find out. It seems to be a Amazonian Chupacabra-like Myth Monster.
