Rock Star alter egos are growing in numbers
"You're forming a fake band -- that's what you do," says Sadri, calling the game "the best part of karaoke, adding in a drummer and guitars."
The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer.

(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that.

To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.

Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood.
making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms.
Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

Top 10 Most Underrated Albums of All Time

I took the day off and have been studying for a Microsoft test I have tomorrow, and having done that for the better part of the day I need to take a break. So lucky for you my break is going to be: The Top 10 Underrated Albums of All Time These are 10 albums that I think everyone should own that I can listen to 10x over in one day. These may not be the best 10 albums I own, but I think that a lot of people either have them and dont know what a treasure they are, or do not own them and need to find them today.
#10 Cold Roses Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

This is by far the newest album on the list. It was released a few months ago and I have loved it ever since its release. A lot of people gave it a fair rating, the album is comprised of 2 disks with 18 songs total. A lot of people said he should have paired it down to 1 album, but I think it is good all the way through. Highlights for me are its first single Let It Ride and my other favorites on the album are Life is Beautiful, Magnolia Mountain, and Cherry Lane.

  #9 Vertigo Jump Little Children

This was the third album I bought of the band and I think it is probably their strongest. I dont know what it is about the writing on the album but it just seems to mend perfectly with the music. Too High and Lovers Greed are both just perfectly written songs. Singer is a great song that has Bivins written all over it and Made It Fine is a fantastic song, that I dont know why was not plastered all over the radio as a summer song.

#8 Astral Weeks - Van Morrison

The oldest record on here. I must admit I was not alive in 68 so this record may have been huge and monumental. It still is for me now. All 8 songs are just perfect. Me and My wife's first dance at our wedding was to Sweet Thing, and I think the title track and Way That Young Lovers do are 2 of the best songs ever written. I recommend this to anyone who wants to hear a singer songwriter in their 20s. I love how rich the CD is (tons of instrumentation) and I think the lyrics just bleed cool.

#7 Before These Crowded Streets The Dave Matthews Band

Yes, I know this album was a huge commercial success, but when taking it in consideration with its predecessors Remember Two Things, Under the Table, and Crash it just seems a lot more darker (Halloween/Stone/Pig) than their previous albums. I loved it. I think Dreaming Tree is one of the best story telling songs of all time (ranks with Dylan in terms of lyrical story telling). I love Alanis Morissette on Spoon, Last Stop is so much more relevant today than it was in 98 when the album was released. It almost seemed to predict todays political/religious atmosphere.

  #6 Seal II Seal

By far one of my favorite albums of all time. My father has commented multiple times about how he knows the CD forward and backward just because I used to play it so much in my room. Kiss From a Rose [Yes, form Batman] is probably the biggest single from the album, but in my opinion any song from the album could be a single. Prayer for the Dying is a beautiful song, Bring It On makes me want to dance as soon as I hear the first beat.

#5 A Momentary Lapse of Reason Pink Floyd

Everyone remembers Floyd by either Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall, but this was the first actual album I bought of Floyd and I like to think one of their hidden gems in the Pink Floyd discography. It is the first album after Waters left the band, but I still think it is a must have for anyone who wants to hear great Floyd besides the 2 previously mentioned albums. I dont know what the singles from this album were, but my personal favorites are Dogs of War and On The Turning Away.

  #4 Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite - Maxwell

I remember buying this CD on a whim after hearing Sumthin Sumthin . When I listen to this album I just think of some suave dude just trying to seduce a woman in an hour. And he does. If I can sum up this album in one word it is smooth. The whole album just sounds smooth. I also have his Unplugged cd and Embrya, but this album by far is his masterpiece. This album makes me want to buy a kickin loft in the middle of NYC and invite some ladies back to the pad for some strait bourbon (or Henny). Instead, I will drink some rum in front of my speakers and just imagine. It is not hard with this album. I have always understood peoples love of Marvin Gaye, but of course not being around back then I dont think I could understand his coolness and suaveness. I think Maxwell is about the closest I will get.

#3 Space Monkeys Vs Gorillaz: Lakia Come Home

I love the Gorillaz, I am sure everyone that reads my blog knows I do because you will constantly see it in play on the top right section (what I am listening too..) . While this really isnt an original album (it is dub remixes) it is still one of the most underrated albums of all time. Everyone I am sure has heard the new Album (and its single Feel Good on the ipod commercials) and the new CD is great. Most of these remixes are from the self titled Gorillaz CD, but I love the way these are remixed here. It is very dub/transic remixing and great for just chilling out and having this playing while I program. I think I actually favor this cd over the original self titled cd that was remixed.

#2 Alone With Everybody Richard Ashcroft

Hardly anyone here in the states had ever heard of Ashcroft until he played with Coldplay at Live 8. Most people dont recognize him from his earlier band The Verve. This was his second solo cd and is one of the best written CDs ever. I dont think I picked up this CD till about 2 years ago (it was made in 2000), but I think the list of songs on this that beats urban hymns hands down in the my opinion (and I loved Urban Hymns). Song for the Lovers is hands down the best song on the album for me but New York is not far behind, Come-on people is a great catchy song that will stick in your head forever. There is also a good remix of Song for the Lovers (by Chemical Brothers?) that is good also.

And the title of most undertated album of all time is..

 #1 - musicforthemornignafter Pete Yorn

Wow, this cd came out of no where for me. I was reading about some people talking about what a great song writer he is so I went and picked it up at Tower Records in Buckhead (only place I could find it). As soon as I did I honestly thought this dude was going to blow up to John Mayer-esque proportions. Throngs of 16-20 year old girls were going to swoon over him at concerts and repeat every word of his songs. (its probably a good thing in his eyes that he didnt). Every single song on this album is amazing. NONE of them are shit. His live album and follow up to this album Day I Forgot are both great also, but this album is worth $30 or $40. It is great and everyone should at least give it one full spin. I almost guarantee you will enjoy it.

Brainstorm it:

"I almost garuntee you will enjoy it."
Way to hedge your bets Poppy, you really went out on a limb there.

I don't think Momentary Lapse of Reason is underrated, but we could argue all day.

Here are my top 10 underrated albums in no particular order (maybe not a full ten, lets see how I feel.):
10. Pavement - Crooked Rain. Pavement was a really cool band that never got as much respect in the alternative genre as it deserved. This is probably their best album.

9. They Might Be Giants - Factory Showroom. This is their only album that sounds like a studio band rather than a couple of musically inclined nerds in a garage. Awesome album that I think anyone could enjoy whether or not they like the rest of the bands work.

8. Pearl Jam - Riot Act. Probably means more to me because I am pretty well aligned with them politically, and this album is a pretty political album. Pretty much everything before Vitology by these guys is way overrated and everything after that is way underrated though.
I dont think Ten holds up nearly as well as Vitalogy, but people love Ten. Go figure.

7. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots. I remember driving home one morning after breaking up with a girl friend, and the lead singer was being interviewed on the radio. He gave a live version of Do You Realize. Anyway, it was so cool I forgot about having just been dumped. Very cool album.

6. The Libertines - Up the Bracket. Awesome cd, probably the best I have heard in years. Of course in Europe this is not underrated, but this is a USA-centric top 10. Barely anyone knows these guys here. I went to see them at the Cotton Club and their lead singer was in rehab for a heroin addiction. Good times.

5.Weezer - Pinkerton.
By far their best album. In the same spirit of anything by Radiohead, the more you listen to this the greater it is. The Blue album and all the others sound the same, this is the band in another direction. Fans either love it or hate it. When it first came out it was like 90%-10% hate - love, since it has reversed itself. But still underappreciated by the masses. Bunch of slobs.

4. Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around
Cash doing cover songs right before his death. Very moving-emotional album. It is almost like the musical version of a dying mans last words. His voice is old and weak, yet still carries weight. Let's move on before I start crying again.

3. Nirvana - In Utero. Probably a weak case for being underrated given how popular it is. But this is their best album even though Nevermind gets credit for being that. And what is worse is that live album they did for MTV gets more attention than this one. Still, I like to think that All Apologies gives you an idea of how much this band was going to grow if Cobain hadnt sucked on that shotgun. They went from a 3 chord garage band to an almost Beatles like melody in a few albums.

All right, I am done. Leaving off 2 & 1.

Wow, great post. I've been needing an infusion of new music lately, too.

I might be wrong, but Richard Ashcroft's "Alone With Everyone" was his debut cd...

"Human Conditions" was his second cd

I kinda love the list. I don't however like Johnny Cash. In fact, I loathe Johnny Cash. Otherwise, good effort.
