Rock Star alter egos are growing in numbers
"You're forming a fake band -- that's what you do," says Sadri, calling the game "the best part of karaoke, adding in a drummer and guitars."
The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer.

(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that.

To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.

Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood.
making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms.
Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

The Only Difference between whining and winning is an h,n and work.

For five days, the government did not act. Lives were lost," Farrakhan said at the 10th anniversary of the Million Man March. "We charge America with criminal neglect." A crowd of thousands cheered as dozens of prominent speakers -- academics, activists, artists and media pundits -- spoke, recited poetry and sang songs in the 12-hour program on the National Mall.

I think the President of the United States is an asshat. I think FEMA is severely short of good management and was multiple days late in helping out Katrina victims, and in some cases seems like a waste of tax payer dollars. I think our President likes to hand out no-bid contracts to friends of the administration. But.. If you can gather 10k people to whine about it in Washington DC, why not gather 10k people to help rebuild down in New Orleans in New Orleans. Since when is it more productive to go to D.C. stand at the steps and bitch about it, rather than organizing a movement to help rebuild? It seems to me that some people want something to whine about more than they want to find a solution. Dont get me wrong, I bitch about this administration all the time on this site, but if I had the power to draw thousands of people to my cause to hear me speak, I think a much louder message would be heard by the media (which leads to DC in the end, by effecting public sentiment) if you were to gather thousands of people to work for a day to bring attention rather than give DC and the local Days Inn tourism dollars. I know this has nothing to do with the Democratic party, but it is very similar to my qualms I have with them. They have the right problem, they just dont seem to provide anything near the right answer. It always seems to be about woe is me or how can they do this to u.s.? (pun/wordplay intended) rather than this is what they should be doing, and this is what we are pushing for, see how we are doing it, this is the way we think it should be. I really feel lost when it comes to political parties. I understand the need for partisan politics (I think that the 'Devil's Advocate' has saved Democracy as a form of Gov't many times becuase of partisan politics, and will continue to do so). But it really sucks when you can't relate to either all that well. Crowds gather for Millions More Movement Farrakhan: 'We charge America with criminal neglect'

Brainstorm it:

I agree and disagree all at once. First thing you must understand is that Bush is - and has been - openly taunting America for quite some time now. There can really be no mistake about this.

Secondly, organizing a thousand person march or whatever is far easier than getting those people to head down to New Orleans. It is likely that people can take one or two days to organize in DC, it is very unlikely they could take weeks to work pro bono down south. Also, it takes skills and ability to rebuild the cities devastated by Katrina that not every marcher has. I guess I don't see the point of your criticism.

Well said E

I'm not talking about taking weeks off, just take the same amount of days that you went to Washington and instead go March in New Orleans. Then after you march, start working for a day or two or whatever you can. I would have much more respect for the cause had they went down spent a day helping and marched, rather than giving a "Luther-like" speech on the mall. I agree with the taking of skills, but habitat for humanity seems to be doing it well with people who don't build houses for a living. Don't get me wrong there were probably a lot of people at that march that actually were helping down inn NO and came up for the march becuase they had first hand experience. I just think it would have been better PR for their cause (which is a good one) had they done something down in NO. It would have looked better to me.

If you want to start "A Few Guys Milling Around Movement" I'm there!
You are right on this one. Good post.

Hopefully soon I will be starting a "A Bunch of guys hanging around Phillips Arena drinking beer trying to find cheap SEC Championship tickets movement"

Now that's the kind of movement I can get behind.

I agree with you, but I don't.
I agree that it would be better for many of those people to go do something. Maybe some of them have, maybe some haven't. Everyone has their own threshold for how involved they are willing to get in some kind of movement.

I also think what you are really speaking to in regards to Farrakhanque (sp?) is that this is less of a genuine concern for him than it is an excuse to generate publicity for himself and get some spotlight time. That is always something one should be wary of with so called "leaders."
