The Magpie Developer
Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer. |

Andy Olmsted's Last Blog Entry.
(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that. |

Drinking stories that put yours to shame
Via Keith
To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.
Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood. |

making vodka pills in 24 hours
Recently, Chef Fabian was experimenting further with the Adria/Torreblanca technique of making 'vodka pills.' I use this word to describe the process of making liquid-filled candies by pouring flavored alcohol syrups into cornstarch and letting it set until a hard outer shell forms. |

Strategy Letter VI - joelonsoftware.com
As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

Lost (as I was at Episode 4)
Well I am a little disappointed at Lost tonight. It was not a bad episode, it just seems that nothing really progressed. I think that the writers were probably told to stretch this thing as far as they can (did you see how many commercials there were tonight?) and I personally think that they stretched it too far. Minus the Walt development (which was somewhat foreshadowed with Walts powers) there really was not much plot advancement. There was the whole episode subplot of Aaron (Claries baby) and the French woman, and also Charlie stumbling back upon he Heroin (everyone knew that was coming) but other than Sawyer getting shot I really didnt see that much plot or character development. This was the season finale, I understand If you still got to keep writing the thing and need to stretch the plot but please give us some kinda tidbits to chew on. This episode bordered on the thin line of intriguing and frustrating. Dear writers, don't stop creating questions just to delay giving the answers of others already asked.
Things discovered this episode:
a.) Jin had to deliver the watch or he was gonna catch shit (already understood)
b.) Michael didnt think he could take care of Walt (new)
c.) Jack switching the packs because he digs Kate (ok kinda knew this)
d.) The security mechanism is underground and mechanical (I am still going with machine/alien theory)
e.) Locke thinks he knows the island too well, which could get him hurt someday (obvious)
f.) The weatherman blowing up (nice addition, thought was comical in a morbid way)
g.) Sawyer developing as a hero and not an ass (nice development, started to see last week)
h.) Walt and Hurley both didnt want to open the hatch (both are harbingers of doom in outside island life, heavy foreshadowing)
i.) Pirates aboard the Black Rock and Pirates that take away Walt. They must have not been keeping a good eye out (extra planer powers) because unless Michael had fired the flare they would have left.
j.) Pirates had a newish looking gun and the smarts to make some maltov cocktails
Sorry if I seem a downer about this episode, I just expected more explanation. Even if you need to leave the season with a hanger I understand, but in all honesty the plot has not advanced in any manner whatsoever from last week minus Walt being taken. This episode kind of let me down after the season finale hype. It may be the reason I dont buy the box set when it comes out. Just nothing new.
Update (5/26/2004 1:45 PM): Looks like some other people were also in the same boat as me. As a whole the series rocked. But the season finale was just fair.

Bittorrent Wars
And so the war begins. I was wondering when the other shoe would fall. The first shoe dropped last week. I understand that they WILL be able to move this to the darknet (it is by far, way to out in the open if web sites are distributing torrents of illegal works, like Ep3, via the web). but what I don't understand is how they think they are going to stop it anywhere else in the world. Some Uzebec or Pakistani entrepeneur is going to come up with a large scale proxy service comming out of his country so users can DL to that local servs (and IPs located there) then ship it back home to their local PC.
Here is the second shoe which happened a few hours ago:

There has been a problem in Google with 302 redirects for about the past year or so. Multiple times no one from Google will comment on it, and I don't know if they are trying to pretend that it does not exist, or don't want to. The problem (in simple terms) comes from 302 redirects which were created so that when you "temporarily" move a page in your site you can issue a 302 redirect to a search engine's spider to say "Hey this page still exists, it has just moved to this location at X". Well Google (and other search engines) follow those and take the "credit" (it is way more complicatedthan this, I am simplifiing) that it has issue to a certain site and applies it to a new site. Well micheavous web sites have been 302'ing other websites and waiting for the temp hold to loosen up and then Google somehow thinks that it needs to apply the credit back to the old site. To give Google credit I have seen examples of people saying that this is actually working for the michevous sites and also examples of them saying it isn't and examples of a magical fairyland with a race of fairies elf hybrids put your site in a jail cell called a "sandbox" but that is another story all together. Regardless I have not figured out if this was the way that this person achieved this, but if you google the word "Adsense" (Google Textual Ad Product) you will see that Google itself has been a victim of a 302 redirect. They rank as number #2 to all-in-one-business.com or somthing. Google.com should rank well for anything Googly on Google. Infact now they rank 2nd, behind another domain (the mischevious one). What better way to prove to Google that the problem exists than to trump them. Very Very nice SE hack. Now I just have to figure out why when you search for 'Cyanbane' on Google my fat toilet seat post comes up as my sites main.

New Music Tuesday
You know what day it is. New Media Day. Here is what I picked up:
I am half way through it and this album is awesome. I loved Electric Circus and this just picks up where it left off. So Good. I didn't know how I was gonna like Kayne West Producing the album, and you can hear how John Legend might have influenced Kayne West's Producing (Legend Produced Kayne West's College Dropout) this album sounds like Legend a little bit, but sounds *very* original . Very good cd. Haven't finished it yet but it could be another 9/10 (rare to have 3 in one month) [Demon Days - Gorillaz]/[Tegan & Sara - So Jealous]. There is a lot of good music out there right now. Also iTunes why only the Clean Version of the CD? Why did you force me to go wait in line at Best Buy?
And Yes that is who you think it is on the Chorus Sampling on Song #3 (Go!). I had to check the Liner Notes just becuase I didn't see how he could get thrown into this mix. Kinda like a Where's Waldo.
Also pick up these two gems that debuted today:

Fire, Brimstone, Sex, and your tax dollars.
At issue was an ACLU lawsuit filed against the Department of Health and Human Services. The ACLU had complained that HHS [Health and Human Services aka Your tax dollars] had provided $1 million since 2003 to the Silver Ring Thing, an abstinence education program. The problem, the ACLU noted, was that this program--a project of the John Guest Evangelistic Team--teaches teens that the only way to achieve true abstinence is by embracing Jesus as their savior. Jesus Christ, the program's study guide claims, is 'the Only Way to God.' Moreover, the programs tells the kids that if they do not become evangelical Christians their 'final destination will be the lake of fire. No arguments. Case closed.
I don't mind the Silver Ring Thing group practicing what they belive and even evangelizing it whenever/where ever they want. I am pretty disturbed to know that my tax dollars are supporting them though.

With Sadness, It Comes Full Circle
"So thats how liberty falls. With thundering applause."
**SPOILERS**
11 out of 10 stars. Thank you so much for ending it with the evil. From the spitting curses of a burning Anakin to implied violence against cute little kids. The movie did not fail to create Darth Vader. I liked Episode 1 and 2 (even Jar Jar). with Ep1 and Ep2 I walked out of the movie theater taken aback by the effects, I dealt with the cheese ("I've always loved you") and took everything in stride. I continue to watch them and still love them. Episode 3 was the Empire Strikes Back of the prequels. It was dark, evil and beautiful. The space fights were amazing. The sound was UNBELIEVABLE. The lightsaber fights were hands down the best of any movie of all time. I loved Grevious. I think that Ian McDiarmid and Hayden Christensen where perfect for their parts and shined in this film. Windu, Yoda and Obiwan are badasses. There are two things that really stick out in my mind after watching this movie; All the post lava scenes were awesome. I literally think I saw film scratches, the sets were right out of the 70s (big push buttons) the flight deck of the destroyer was amazing. Blockade Runner was awesome. Everything just seemed to fade right into A New Hope. The end scene on Tatooine gave me chills. The second thing was again how badass Yoda was. The senate room scene rocked. The dropping of the Imperial Guards was just beyond awesome. Just an awesome, awesome way to end the series. If it was not so late I would be watching ANH right now.
I will lay my head down to go to sleep tonight dreaming about the Order of Jedi knights, just like a 6 year old boy I used to know. The only difference is that I won't be sleeping on Twin bed star wars sheets. And I will have a few beers in me. Thank you GL.
Update (6:23PM 5/20/2005): It's the day after and I have subconciously processed a lot of stuff about the movie. 3 things that I thought about:
a.) I know it was defintly not meant to be. But for some reason Natalie Portman's bigger hair throughout the movie has made me subconciously link my view of her in the movies to a larger pregnant brittany spears. Maybe I am reading Pinkisthenewblog too much lately.
b.) Me and Lindz discussed on the way home form the movie theatre, is Palpatine/Sidous was supposed to be the student that killed Darth P-something who had learned to control life and death by using the force?. It kinda alluded to it, but never really said if he was that student. But what makes me think more on it that he said Darth P-something had the ability to create life/midochlorians. Anakin was supposed to be the holy virginal birth in Episode 1. Could he have been created by Darth P-something?
c.) Yoda still fuking rocks. I keep playing the dropping of the imperial guard scene in my head. When I was a little kid they were one of my favorite sets of characters in the movies. They had some vicious polearms. They were the Green Berets, the delta force of storm troopers. Hand selected badasses by the emperor and Yoda just gives them a passing glance and a just drops them.

More Googl-y stuff. Reporters without Borders asked Goog point blank if they planned to censor Google China (at the nations request). Remember, The Chinese Gov't already blocked Google News (sound like corporate America yet?). There reaction was that the new Goog offices in China are there to research the waters. With China's economy growing so fast I personally expect they will bow down and censor what the Govt wants them too so that they can swim in the golden economy. Another reason the old Google is going away. In my opinion, information is free and a gov't should in no way block communication into and out of it by it's people, I think the old Google would have been an adament guard of this. The new Google only sees the Ad Revenue I think though :( Anakin -> Vader = Google The Search Engine -> Google The Advertising Company. What happens when the Library of Alexandria no longer cares about providing information for free? Or offers that channel of content delivery to the highest bidder? Or worst yet, what if they are taken over by a Gov't? Information organization is a good thing, but its when the ability to present that to people for free wanes, then it is an extremely scary thing.

What GW would have said in 2003 (pre election): = "I made [it] very clear to the Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life, my administration is against that"

The spin:
On the face of it, it looks like it is the Democrats that are being stubborn by threatening to filibuster judicial nominees.
The reality:
The numbers show something different, the Senate agreed to approve all but 1.5% of judicial nominees, and the Republicans are threatening to change one of the fundamental checks and balances on government to have things 100% instead of 98.5% their own way.
"Since Bush took office, he has made 218 judicial nominations and the Senate has confirmed 208 of them. Ten, including Owen, failed to win confirmation because of Democratic filibusters. Seven of those 10 were renominated at the start of this year. Of those seven, Democrats have indicated that they would be willing to confirm as many as four to avoid the showdown.
Ineresting info from DavidGalgraith.org. I personally did not realize that the Dems had let so many pass without incident. When I was younger my dad told me a really good analogy during the first gulf war. We were discussing why Sadaam was lighting all the Kuwait oil fields on fire and he told me that Sadaam was just like a little kid whose parents are forcing him to give a stolen toy back. The kid knows he has to give it back, but just out of spite he wants to break it before he gives it back only because he has the power to at the moment before he gives the toy back. I see a lot of semblance with the "nuclear option" if the elephants choose to execute it. They are not getting all they want, so they are going to make sure it gets broken if they can't get their way. I think that they don't look to far ahead into the future. Yeah they may not get there 1.5% of nominations through for Bush's Admin, but they will not be the ruling party forever. Some day they are gonna need the "Da Busta" to , and they are gonna be shit outta luck. But then again when has this Rep. admin ever thought ahead?
Challenge Lord Vader. [thanks Judd]

Bullshit.
I ordered On Bullshit by Henry G. Frankfurt a few days ago and it came in this afternoon. It looked like an extremely easy read so I read it this evening. I read a decent amount, usually about 50% tech books (programming/programming theory/mathematics) and 50% random stuff. I dont read a lot of philosophy so I dont really know how to describe this book (its really almost an essay on Bullshit). I literally got to the end and I dont know if it really is a big joke on the readers, because although it was somewhat interesting I almost felt like it was 70 pages OF Bullshit. Maybe that is the point? That you read so much about in the first 69 pages that you grasp that what you are mainly reading is bullshit on the 70th page? I really dont want to call it Bullshit if Frankfurt really meant it as a serious lecture, but for me it just seemed to jump back and forth over the concept of 'is Bullshit really just lying?' Then it would run to 'If not, is it worse than lying?' then bounce back to 'Is lying worse than Bullshitting?' (Which I thought technically we covered this already) Its not a hard read, pick it up if you can and tell me what you think. I also have a copy if you physically know me and want to borrow it. I am not sure if you want to though, I say that because I dont want to bullshit you.

The Empire Strikes
'When I wrote it, Iraq didn't exist,' Lucas said, laughing.
' 'We were just funding Saddam Hussein and giving him weapons of mass destruction. We didn't think of him as an enemy at that time. We were going after Iran and using him as our surrogate, just as we were doing in Vietnam . . . The parallels between what we did in Vietnam and what we're doing in Iraq now are unbelievable.' '
Lucas said he has long been interested in the transition from democracy to dictatorship.
'In ancient Rome, 'why did the senate, after killing Caesar, turn around and give the government to his nephew?' Lucas said. 'Why did France, after they got rid of the king and that whole system, turn around and give it to Napoleon? It's the same thing with Germany and Hitler.'
' 'You sort of see these recurring themes where a democracy turns itself into a dictatorship, and it always seems to happen kind of in the same way, with the same kinds of issues, and threats from the outside, needing more control. A democratic body, a senate, not being able to function properly because everybody's squabbling, there's corruption.'

Perhaps the best example is Sony's "God of War" a compelling, gory action/adventure game set in ancient Greece. As Kratos, you must battle Hydras and obtain Pandora's Box as you prepare to wage war against Aries. The game's fight sequences have been widely praised as some of the best seen on the PlayStation 2.
But amidst the carnage are bare-breasted women and even a sex mini-game, where Kratos is tasked with pleasuring two women at once. The scene is rather comical, as the camera shifts away from the participants and focuses on a vase, which shakes more and more as Kratos gets closer to his goal.
It's a great game I recomend it to anyone. Especially 10-13 year old boys. I would have killed for a game like it when I was a kid. I had to settle for Leisure Suit Larry (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD EGA!).

LEEEROOOOOOYYY JEEEEENKINS!!!
Alright Alright I know I am trying to post all humorous links in one post a day but this was just too good. It needed its own post. This movie just cracks my ass up. It is from the MMORPG World of Wacraft, you probably won't understand how funny this is till you play an Online RPG, but basically all the little guys you see on the screen at the beginning are real life people across the world (they are the ones talking) who are about to enter (the doors) and meticulously planning on how to attack this really hard part of the game. While everyone stands around planning this hard fight (one of the guys mentions they have a 32.333% chance of living) one of the guys "Leroy" yells a battle charge (you can hear him in the video) and goes balls to wall and the whole group gets owned (for those that don't play when you die you get penalized and basically it really sucks). So awesome. I am literally crying at laughing so hard.

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, again, all these issues will be looked at as part of a broad review by the independent commission that the President appointed. It's important that we -- but I remind you, too, that the Iraq Survey Group work -- the work of the Iraq Survey Group is ongoing. Charles Duelfer gave an update to Congress last week, a status report. But again, he reaffirmed what David Kay previously said, that Iraq was in serious violation of its -- of the Security Council resolutions. But it's important that we look at what we learn on the ground and compare that with what we believed prior to going into Iraq. And that's exactly what the independent commission will do.

Movement to the Ninja Movement (Into the Shadows).
As of late I have had a hard time with my blog. Not because I don't love it (I Do) but because I feel there are a few things that I want to do with it:
I want to post less single updates in a day (There are some days I post 7-10 short updates with just a single line of opinion and a link). While this is not bad to update, I want to make it more concise and differentiate between "Content Links" I provide and Opinions on topics (politics, religion, music, etc).
With that as my mission statement. I was having trouble trying to figure out some way to quantify the movement of how I wanted to shift the content of my blog. Then I came across this glorious article. This is perfect way to explain the nature of not me (as this article orientates blog writers) I want to orientate the content of my blog. Currently I feel there is a lot of ideas expressed on my blog, but they are usually just "surface" opinions on subjects and links. I currently feel that my blog is positioned here on this spectrum:
With the changes I am going to implement I will hopefully traverse the path from semi-pirate to a developing ninja (content), also becoming a little more elvish in the process (small graphical changes/organizational).
I have set up a backpack page to keep myself and others who might be interested in these changes for my blogs movement "into the shadows".
