Jeff Atwood is one of the best programmer/writers around. I love reading his stuff, some I agree wholeheartedly with, other stuff we disagree, but this post is about a dead-on as they come. This idea has been floating in my head for a long time, but it is hard for me to conceptualize it in words, Atwood does a brilliant job at it. Must read for any developer.

(Warning: Pretty rough) No matter how you feel politically about the war, this reminds you that each number people throw around as statistics is a human life. This is extremely well written, and pretty rough on your soul towards the end, but something everyone should read. Its a shitty situation all around, but there is always a human face behind the statistics and I want to make sure I never forget that.

To preserve his body during the voyage home, the second-in-command stored Nelson's body in the ship's vat of rum and halted all liquor rations to the crew. Not a bad idea, but when the ship reached port, officials went to retrieve Nelson's body and found the vat dry.

Disregarding good taste (in every sense), the crew had been secretly drinking from it the entire way home. After that, naval rum was referred to as Nelson's Blood.

As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.

New York Times - ORLY?

What if, instead of burning up minutes on your cellphone plan, you could make free or cheap calls over the wireless networks that allow Internet access in many coffee shops, airports and homes? New phones coming on the market will allow just that. Instead of relying on standard cellphone networks, the phones will make use of the anarchic global patchwork of so-called Wi-Fi hotspots. Other models will be able to switch easily between the two modes. The phones, while a potential money-saver for consumers, could cause big problems for cellphone companies. They have invested billions in their nationwide networks of cell towers, and they could find that customers are bypassing them in favor of Wi-Fi connections. The struggling Bell operating companies could also suffer if the new phones accelerate the trend toward cheap Internet-based calling, reducing the need for a standard phone line in homes with wireless networks.
This was from Today's New York Times, probably not news to you if you read this blog in Sept of last year. The Wi-Fi in Your Handset

"As if executing a cosmic air kiss, Earth and Mars will come as close as they desire in the wee hours of Wednesday during an historical event that has captivated the attention of skywatchers around the globe. The two planets will be separated by 34,646,418 miles (55,758,006 kilometers) at 5:51 a.m. ET (1051 GMT) on Aug. 27. Not since the Neanderthals shared this planet with early humans have the two worlds been so close."

Interesting Method of Info Gathering By Israelis

Amazingly interesting website. For those that don't understand why it is so amazing, it is because someone in Israel created this website so that Lebanese Citizens could submit information about Hezbollah via the web (with the utmost goal of targeting the correct places and not civilians in Lebanon with Israeli military). From how I am interpreting this website, it is not Gov't sanctioned and is ran by citizens of Israel. Not that i don't think it is actually a good plan (I assume Military Intel Gathering is probably much like Business Marketing, any information/publicity is better than none). Here is what pops into my head when seeing this: 1.) Much like many things on the web, the person who put this up believes in the sanctity of the information provided. (ie. who doesn't think Hezbollah is smart enough to submit false info via this shiny interface)? 2.) It is forward thinking and creates a statement for both Israel and it citizens. It creates a statement on many fronts. 3.) It circumvents many news agencies (where it will inevitable get spun) by using viral marketing and word of mouth/blog circulation. (maybe even giving it more credibility?) 4.) It shows a different way that war can be waged on the internet (exempt of hacking). 5.) I would love to see the response (and IPs that have been recorded, tracerouted, to certain originating countries) that this gets. all4lebanon

Guster / Ray LaMontagne - Chastain Amplitheatre 7/21/2006

We bought these tix a few months back when Chastain announced the show (a little later than they announced their summer schedule package). I was excited to actually get to see Guster in a larger venue and eager to see if they would pack the place which is a step up from the normal Athens/Atlanta area venues they play. I think around 4k/5k people were at this show. I am sure that the double billing with Ray LaMontagne brought in a bunch of people also. LaMontagne opened, was kind of a disappointment. I really love Trouble, and I don't think there a bad song on the album. LaMontagne played about 6 songs off this album and 2 from a new album which I believe will be coming out in late August. He seemed fairly charismatic, I don't know if it was the oppressive heat, or just not enough riffing with the bandmates, but all the songs sounded EXACTLY as they are on the CD with no variation. There are a lot of people that enjoy this, but I personally don't. I like to see some variety, sometimes it can erk me when it just doesn't sound good, but I love a good jam band, and I also love it when a band slows something down and create something new with a song. After seeing LaMontagne i don't think I would ever pay to see him solo unless it was at a much smaller (read: BAR) venue. It seems like you need to see him in a setting like that after hearing his part of the show. Guster was as good as Guster always is. They are just the definition of a band that gets the crowd into the show. I think they may have actually surpassed DMB (for me personally) as the band that dialogues with the audience to a large degree and switches stuff up based on how the audience is giving the band feedback. Ryan the lead singer had multiple dialogs with the audience in which he repeated that he was majorly weirded out about the all the wine and cheese eaters at the tables surrounding the stage, and commented about the lavish flower arrangements people had brought in. He also must have been really into food at some point (or still is) because he asked the crowd to bring him something to eat at one point, and there was a ton of food brought on stage and he was rolling off the names of foreign dishes and french cheeses like it was old news to him. The setlist was pretty big (maybe 20 songs) which spanned all 5 albums, which was great. Although I enjoy the new album I really like the older, more up beat, songs of Gold Fly and Lost and Gone Forever. I was really hoping for the old school bongo cover of Killing the Name of, but alas it seems that might only be a college memory. If you have never seen Guster live, then the next best thing is to poke around the Live Music Archive and pull some live shows or grab some of the better recorded ones off iTunes. They simply rock live.

Brainstorm it:

Bastard, I'm jealous you got to see guster. Was it full band with a bass player and all that or was it just the guitars and the bongos?

I was at the concert too... my first time at Chastain, but my 5th or 6th time seeing Guster. Ray was good, but his set was definitely too short and a little interaction with the crowd couldn't have hurt either. Guster was awesome... not my -favorite- show from them, but they never disappoint when you see them live.

Klosterman on Danger Mouse/Cee-Lo

"They first interacted in the mid-90's, on a rainy night in Athens, Ga., back when Burton was still an unknown telecommunications student at the University of Georgia. Goodie Mob was playing a show with OutKast, and there was a local talent contest to see who would serve as the opening act. Burton enlisted a few friends and created an ad hoc group dubiously dubbed Rhyme & Reason. They placed second in the contest, but they still got to perform at the show. Afterward, Burton gave Cee-Lo a CD of music he had been working on, because he knew Cee-Lo's tastes went outside the normal parameters of rap." "He knew I liked Portishead," Cee-Lo said. "That was our unspoken bond. When he told me he dug Portishead, that was all I needed to know." Considering the consciously genre-defying construction of "St. Elsewhere," it might seem almost paradoxically predictable that the druggy, suicidal soundscapes of a white British trip-hop act served as the foundation for a musical relationship between two black guys in Georgia. "When I played my music for Cee-Lo," Burton says, "he moved his body in the way I imagined this music was supposed to make people react. So I thought, Maybe I've found the singer for these songs."
I have been reading up on Burton for the last couple of weeks, then one of my favorite Musical writers (if you have not read Killing Yourself To Live and/or Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs your missing out) {Klosterman) comes out with this today. Klosterman Article: The D.J. Auteur - New York Times

World Events at Large (or small)

I think that everyone who is reading this lives in an extremely pivotal point in human history. I am sure that every thinker since the dawn of man has always considered their lifetime of their generation as the generation ushering in the most change, so I have no delusions that I might not be alone (throughout history) but the last 15 years have no doubt ushered in an era of communication between people all over the world, or the human race. The reason that I think this time period is so neat is because we are living in what is essentially the wild west period of the internet. I am sure that over the next 5 - 10 years, with the onslaught of DRM, and state mandated internet activity monitors and this lawless town that is the internet will get sheriff's and a formal over site system and become a regular town. I honestly think that we will see little things like this that remind us all that there is beauty is the ability for anyone anywhere being able to speak there mind, but hurry and read the thread (most notably Dovster (Israel) and BEYFlyer (Beirut)) and the exchange of words between them and the world community at large (on a Frequent Flier Miles website for that matter). You better hurry and read it quick though, because like their governments the thread will soon be hijacked by people on the outer ends of the spectrum from both governments and it will turn into all out message board war (just like their countries). This thread should be saved somewhere and posted on the wall of every world leader. FlyerTalk scoops the world with news report!

Ralph Reed's "Legacy"

Yet if Reed does win, these analysts add, that could potentially hurt incumbent Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, who's favored to win re-election in the fall. While candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run separate campaigns in Georgia, Democrats would obviously try to link Reed -- and Abramoff -- to Perdue. "Reed puts a whole new dynamic in the race," says InsiderAdvantage's Towery.
It is amazing to me that Ralph Reed's connections to Abramoff that he would have even ran in this election. I don't think he has one ounce of "family values" that he claims to have and he sure as hell isn't getting my vote, but I was interested in the connection (at least that is perceived) in this article. I am a big fan of Sonny, but I never would have connected a Reed win to Sonny's campaign. British cast to appear on American version of The Office - TV Squad

Some of the American characters on NBC's The Office are going to come face-to-face with their British alter-egos! American executive producer Ben Silverman says next season we can expect to see Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth; Martin Freeman, who played Tim; and Lucy Davis, who played Dawn on the American version of the show. These are essentially the alter egos to Dwight, Jim, and Pam. I think I'm most excited to see Dwight butt heads with militaristic Gareth, but I know my heart will be torn between Jim and Tim!
Weirdness. I loved the BBC version much more than the US version, but the US version is insanely funny. Wonder how this will work out. Will Pam fall for Jim? Will Tim go for Dawn? Shine On You Crazy Diamond

I won't pretend that the Syd Barrett Era of Floyd was my favorite. I enjoyed Piper at the Gates, still that time period of Floyd was good music, just not my favorite Floyd Music. The "Kinks" ish sounds kinda ended after Barrett left and then Floyd migrated to that ethereal Waters/Gilmour sound on concept albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Atome Heart Mother, etc) which was the enjoyable stuff for me. I once heard Shine on You Crazy Diamond (parts 1 -7 :) was a song about how Barrett went a little off his rocker at one point, either due to the excess of LSD from the Piper/Saucerful of Secrets Era or something and they wrote about it. But I will always remember a quote I heard from one of the band mates after Barrett left who said that he would try to brush his teeth by jumping up and down and holding the tooth brush still. I am sure he an eventful life.

Obesity in America - Interactive Flash Map

I was going to post this on the left hand side under interesting links, but it is pretty interesting graphic. It is an animated map of the obesity problem in America. What is so surprising to me is that it is such a new phenomenon. The map only starts in 1980. Obesity in America

Brainstorm it:

I can assure you that the Obesity problem has been around before 1980 but the CDC didn't start concerning themselves with it until 1980. It's pretty evident to me what the causes are. The types of jobs that people have now are increasingly less active, fast food is a staple in a lot of diets, no one is really willing to get off their asses and exercise, etc. The big concern to me is childhood obesity. The parents aren't around and the kid isn't going to eat right by his/herself. I see new diabetes cases everytime I go into a doctors office. It's scary. What's more scary is the people who won't do anything to control it.

I don't trust BMI.

All it does is make a ratio of height and weight.

Take me, I am 6'4 and about 220 lbs. My BMI is 26.8, which is considered overweight. I have about 9% body fat.

Weight lifting and exercise has become a bigger part of our culture in the last 20 years. BMI does not distinguish between good weight and bad weight.

Another problem is this: where do these statistics come from? If I am not mistaken, they come from patient data at doctors offices rather than a random representative survey of America. We can assume that obesity and poor health are highly correlated, so a higher percentage of fatties are going to the doctor and are over-represented in the BMI data.

Having said all that, BMI is probably a fairly good first approximation of our country's fattitude, but I would only consider it a rough estimate at best. The map was neat though.

Under all of my obesity is a tight and ripped body of steel. This is something the report missed. Just because I carry a few extra pounds on my body doesn't mean that I'm not healthy. I do it to protect my muscles and to keep my marriage safe. If I were in great shape it wouldn't be fair to the women of the world and it wouldn't be fair to my wife.
I'm just trying to do what's right.

MC, I've always hated that damned BMI bull. I'm with you there. It has never considered lean mass. Ever since the first time I've caclulated my BMI I've been around the 24-26 range. According to the powers that be I've been overweight all my life. Hell I was even overweight when I was 5% bodyfat. I'm really suprised that someone hasn't come out with another way of determining obesity.

Great Read = ESSAY: The Garden State effect

Or maybe I just want to be able to see my favorite bands without some inebriated douchebag loudly and violently humping the monitor speakers during quiet songs in a cloud of his own cologne. In theory, anyone whos passionate about musicwhether a genre or a specific bandis also passionate about that music reaching a wider audience. But theyre actually not: theyre passionate with qualifiers. When I say that I want as many people as possible to like my favorite bands, what I actually mean is that I want as many people as possible to like my favorite bands for the right reasonsnot necessarily my reasonsbut the right ones (whatever they are). Or maybe what I actually mean is that I want as many people as possible to support my favorite bands; I only want these people to go to shows for the right reasons.
This is a supurb read. I would be lying if I said I didnt go through a faze of listening to music just to hear the next big thing. I still have the same tenacity in finding new artists to listen to, but I do it solely for the pleasure of hearing something new now. This is most certainly because I am no longer in college, and no long live in one of the best places to listen to local music. I live about an hour outside Atlanta, and although we do go into the city to see concerts and bands, or nights when I dont get home from work till 7 or 8, it is much harder to get dressed and load back up to head back to Atlanta. We were 10 mins away usually from great venues in Athens, and if anyone ever came into town that I had even heard of might be good, me and D would try to go. (And sometimes record it). Unfortunately though now real life has caught up, and Lindz is very good about going with me to see bands that are not necessarily playing large venues (and a lot of times she tells me about the shows before I even realize the band is playing here). I just know that if I am going to be paying $20 + a 50% ticketbastard markup then I want to make sure I am going to be able to get to the show and stay for the entire thing. So it majorly pisses me off if the crowd is lame, I know it is entirely selfish, and I know I was one of those people at some point in my life, but it just gets old after a while, even sooner after you have spent $70 on the evening. Every now and then we happen upon some gems, where the act isnt huge yet and the music is splendid and the ticket price is reasonable or below reasonable, and the artist actually comes out to meet people after the show. Those are the best shows and the ones that no matter how many more times you see the artists, you will always remember, and if you are lucky get to hear again.

Brainstorm it:

First off, I miss Athens. And even though you sort of complain about going to shows in Atlanta, at least you have the opportunity to hear new music. I've seen some great shows down here but in the 4 years I've been in SoFla I've seen maybe 3. And those shows I had tickets weeks in advance. I haven't stumbled onto anything down here. There is one radio station that doesn't play top 40 or reggaeton. I can't wait to get back to Atlanta. Dealing with lame ass crowds is just an unfortunate part of going to shows. I hate the fanboys and fangirls just as much as the next guy. I just can't wait to return to good music. I miss Athens.

(Tuesday, July 4)

It is a sad 4th of July

I consider myself a conservative (if you read this blog regularly over the last few years you might wonder why), but here is a perfect example: It is a sad, sad July 4th when the people that we elect are more worried about something like this, than something like this. I love this country, but sometimes it's elected leadership boggles my mind.

Brainstorm it:

It's like I always say:

The party in power is always corrupt, while the minority party is always crazy.

I think that the second matter is being reviewed and that our elected leadership should let the right people deal with the matter. Sometimes you just need to believe in something good and that religious persecution no matter how small should not be a reason to turn away from a problem. I think July 4th is a day to remember the good things about our country and try to honor those that have given everything to keep it free and not dwell on bad things. At least for one day. Just my thought.

I agree that the second matter is being dealt with (and at a pretty swift manner), I won't play the 'what ifs' to say it could have been avoided. I do wish I had your positive faith in the current set of elected officials (not limited to a certain party) anon.

But the truth is I don't.

Don't get me wrong, I still had a great forth (I didn't sit all day in bed and dream of a better leadership). This was just something I noted, and was a fairly extreme ends of the spectrum. There seem to be many many other pressing issues that our leadership needs to work on besides changing a PG rating to a G rating on a movie (regardless of religious content).

I did spend all day in bed on the fourth, but it was because the sickness got ahold of me. I think your on point.

I didn't find any joy in celebrating the fourth of July though as things currently stand. I am a human before I am an American, and what we are doing overseas is revolting to me as a human being. I personally find it tacky to superficially celebrate our ideals and freedoms while we work to compromise those ideals abroad. I am not asking anyone to come with me, that is just how I feel. (Which, if you still read my blog Eric, would explain my post on the 4th.)

Danger Mouse

Brian Burton was born in White Plains, New York; he spent much of his childhood in Spring Valley, New York and lived in Athens, Georgia for a long time where his electronica work was released under the name Pelican City. He also re-mixed work by several local artists, including Neutral Milk Hotel. From 1998 to 2003 Burton also created a series of remix CDs and records under the stage name Danger Mouse (inspired by the British cartoon series DangerMouse). Burton's first original releases under the name Danger Mouse were his collaborations with rapper Jemini, including the album Ghetto Pop Life, released in 2003 on Lex Records. While the Danger Mouse debut was well received by critics, he did not rise to fame until he created The Grey Album, mixing a cappella versions of Jay Z's The Black Album over beats crafted from samples of The Beatles' White Album. The remix album, originally created just for his friends, spread over the internet and became very popular with both the general audience and critics, with Rolling Stone calling it "the ultimate remix record"[2] and Entertainment Weekly ranking it the best record of the year.[3] Danger Mouse was also named among the Men of the Year by GQ in 2004 and won the 2005 Wired Rave Award.[4]

Then when the greatest hits CD came out to be honest I was really hoping it didn't mean the end to one of my favorite brit bands. Boy With No Name is everything they were capable of. Supurb CD all the way through. Every song is brilliant. Big Chair is probably my favorite song and the opening to the CD on 3 Times is as good as it gets in music imho.
Pop! Why Bubbles are Great For The Economys (Gross)
One of the better economic books I have read in while, where the author gets their premise across in a well written, clear and concise manner. Basically Gross believes that the infrastructure left over after economic bubbles, provides companies with the ability to move forward (maybe more than the original bubble did). Not a hard read, I would definitely suggest it for a day and the beach/lake.
Feist - The Reminder
I CANNOT GET "I feel it all" OUT OF MY HEAD. Period. Great album, angelic voice.
Catan - Xbox Live Arcade
I am hopelessly addicted to this board-turned-video game on the xbox360. I had never played the board game but had seen it being played in some comic shops growing up. Click the Pick and play the demo, it isn't the 360 interface, but same game.
Arctic Monkeys - Favorite Worse Nightmare
No Sophomore slump here. Just as good (if not better) than Whatever they Say.
Beautiful Evidence (Tufte)
Tufte reads like a text book, most people would say bleh, but the information about "information" that he can deliver is top notch. My first Tufte book was "A Visual Display To Quantitative Information" and it was extremely well done, albeit confusing at time. I think beautiful Evidence is a little easier of a read (I am still only half way through it) and a little easier for myself to understand the ideas he is presenting..
Fountains of Wayne - Traffic and Weather
Fountains of Wayne are the Gods of pop music. If Welcome Interstate Managers was a collection of short stories in song form, then Traffic and Weather is an even better collection with more humor. I already feel like CNN has the hottest female anchors, imagining them throwing their lust around like the Title track to the CD makes it even better.
Game of Thrones (Martin)
I started this book assuming it was going to be a high fantasy novel. Elfs, Dragons, Magic and the like. It isn't. It IS fantasy but more surrounding the politics and cunning of a few high ranking families. Incest, Murder, Intrigue, unscrupulous midgets. It has it all and more.
