I really thought this review hit the nail on the head:
I glanced around the theater, eavesdropping on numerous conversations of a similar nature. It was in this nstant that I realized something had happened which I'd never before experienced in the franchise's long history. Abrams and his gang have accomplished what even STAR TREK's own creator could not - they've fashioned a STAR TREK for everyone. Young and old, newbie and veteran. A STAR TREK for fans of action, lovers of drama, and folks just looking to kill two hours on a hot Summer afternoon.
Merrick Says Goodbye, And Hello, To STAR TREK...
After watching this film it did two things, a.) made me realize how great characters and actors can really make a movie, and b.) how in looking back Ep 1-3 of Star Wars were really only mediocre (at best). At the time I really liked them, but after seeing what a real "franchise reset" looks like, I am forced to say that there is really no comparison (and I don't consider myself a huge Trek geek by any means).
bonus... don't be a dickhead.
